Hosting & managing entertainment & sporting events is an art that demands trained staff with a ‘sunny’ attitude, knowledge, trust and confidence. Mabway congratulates our sporting competitors on their great success in recent years, all of which are a just reward for all their preparation and training. Through their efforts they have set high standards that the UK must achieve repeatedly in both competition and management of the Major Events.
The UK will be host to a number of large-scale sporting events in the coming years, For example, this summer Trent Bridge, Lord’s and the Oval will host the Twenty20 World Cup. Lord’s and the Oval will host Ashes Test matches and Wembley will host the FA Cup Final, England internationals, various music concerts and the 2011 Champions League final. London will also host the Wimbledon annually and the next Olympic and Paralympic Games when the projected numbers of teams, press and visitors to the UK over the 3 month period is estimated at 10,000,000. The same year will see the Queen celebrate her Diamond Jubilee. Glasgow will host the Commonwealth Games in 2014 and there is the possibility of England being chosen to host a Football World Cup in 2018!
Preparation work for all of these events starts very early on and involves an extensive amount of building, planning and management. All this work towards staging the event and creating the experience will depend upon the professional approach of those ‘human faces’ that ensure the events, transport and hotel services run smoothly.
During previous Major Events there have been problems amassing the necessary number of people needed to administer the events and training them. In Beijing, for example, a part of the Peoples Liberation Army was volunteered. The UK doesn’t have such resources available for Major Events and so will need to achieve the standards through more efficiency and training.
Organising Major Events, such as the World Cup, the Commonwealth Games and the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee will need Central & Local Government, the ‘Blue Light ‘Services, Industry, Transport and the voluntary sectors to work together in an integrated fashion.
Is your organisation involved in a Major Event now or in future? What sort of training does your team need to put in place? How can that training become a legacy for both the organisation and the individual?
