Royal Navy sailors preparing to deploy to Afghanistan are put through their paces as part of a week’s training exercise at Longmoor training camp in Hampshire.

The personnel who have been selected or volunteered to deploy spend three weeks at HMS Nelson and HMS Excellent in Portsmouth, learning vital skills such as weapon handling and counter explosive training.

The sailors, who have a wide range of skills, deploy to Afghanistan for six months to take on administrative, logistical or tactical jobs both at the main operating bases and the forward operating bases (FOBs). Alongside those deploying to Afghanistan are also sailors deploying to Iraq in support of the Iraqi Navy training & mentoring the Iraqi Navy and also providing Force Protection one of the Iraqi Oil Platform.

Trained by Royal Marine and Royal Navy staff at the Pre-deployment Training and Mounting Centre at Portsmouth Naval Base, the personnel are prepared for all types of scenarios, from casualty evacuations to being ambushed on patrols. Mabway Ltd is responsible for providing the demonstration troops for these exercises and works very closely with the exercise controllers to ensure as much realism as possible.

“There are approximately 260 Royal Navy personnel serving in Afghanistan,” explains the Centre’s Officer In Command (OIC) Lieutenant Commander Pat O’Callaghan. “That’s not just Royal Marines – that’s personnel from across the Navy with specialist skills that are required to serve in Afghanistan.
“They spend four weeks with us learning valuable skills for theatre, some of it very new and very different to what they do on a day-to-day basis in ships and submarines.
“We train up to 80 personnel 12 times a year so there is a constant rotation in the main operating bases, the Forward Operating Bases, headquarters in Kabul and also working with the Afghan National Army.”

At Longmoor the sailors stay overnight in a makeshift Forward Operating Base and go on regular vehicle and foot patrols where they learn how to react when ambushed. Charity Amputees in Action assist by creating realistic scenarios where casualties have lost lower limbs and are clearly distressed.
“With the casualties it’s a real shock for the guys when they come round the corner and find them all lying there covered in blood,” said Medical Assistant (MA) Becky Williams, who was deployed to Afghanistan on Op Herrick 9.
“It’s scary knowing where you are deploying to, but this training is great because they must know what to expect and they will be able to draw back on their training if they get into these types of situations.”
